I recently signed up for a service that will scan the internet to find if you data has been compromised. I was shocked when I found that my social security number was on the dark web. When I looked into this further, I realized that it was due to a data breach that occurred involving ATT. Apparently ATT acknowledged this and agreed to financial compensation for those impacted but the money is still in limbo. There are other institutions that are known to have been hacked including Synchrony Bank. Due to that hack, my email address appeared on the dark web.

Being scammed/hacked is becoming a day to day occurrence. When you think you are a victim, it is crucial to act promptly. You need to check the security setting on your phone and laptop and check your financial institutions to find out how secure they are. My banks were very helpful in this regard and now practically every charge on my account is flagged and they reach out to me is check if I authorized it. Fidelity has also done a good job at handling this situation. Educating yourself helps. And of course be wary if someone wants you to deposit crypto or asks you to buy gift cards. The gaps in cyber security is a concern, not just for your own financial well being but for the safety of our country.
