FLORIDA

I moved to Florida almost 2 years ago. I recently heard it referred to as God’s waiting room. The phrase “God’s waiting room” is a long‑running American idiom that refers to Florida as a place where people — especially retirees — go to “wait” for the end of life. It’s a humorous, somewhat cynical way of describing the state’s large population of older adults living out their final years there

Living here has had its ups and downs. On the positive side, the weather is great during the winter months, you can’t beat the abundance of nature, and the cost of living in some areas is reasonable. On the negative side, the weather during the summer months is constantly hot and humid. It is overcrowded and driving is often stressful. While I have encountered many nice people here, there are a good number of super wealthy people with a sense of entitlement. Living among my fellow senior citizens is both good and bad. We do share a common history – others know what it was like growing up in the Kennedy era and the effect of woodstock/hippies/the VN war, on our shared history. But let’s face it, elderly drivers are often bad drivers, seniors often need help getting their groceries to the car, and they tend to be too concerned/into your own personal life.

I now live on a lake and my days are filled with joy from my daily encounters with turtles, egrets, cranes, and ducks. The other day I spotted an osprey, how special.

I do miss the changing seasons in Ohio, the Buckeyes, and the amazing forests there.
