not all autistic people can be classified as a savant but a disproportionate number of savants also fall on the autistic spectrum disorder. We used to call them idiot savant but that term is no longer politically correct. To be classified as a savant one needs to have an IQ below 70 with extraordinary abilities in a certain area, be it math, art or music. Dustin Hoffman did a brilliant job of giving us a slice of what it means to be a savant. His character in Rainman was based on a real person. It shows their inability to connect with others and their need to routines. Interesting, the ability that a savant has may suddenly vanish.
The study of savants gives researchers a look into the complexities on the brain, which constantly astounds me. The understanding of brain functioning is really at an infant stage.
