Yesterday the news reported that a woman in Times Square had stabbed several people before the police killed her. Everyone can rest easy as another violent person is dead.
As a post script the news reported that this woman had a look history of mental illness. I wonder why they also do not talk about the fact that many mentally ill people remain in the community untreated. Why don’t they talk about the state of mental health treatment across the country.
WhenI started out as a psychologist, patients stayed at the mental hospital where I was employed for months. Years later when I left the hospital, the length of stay had declined to weeks. And I have witnessed the community mental health system undergo significant funding cuts.
So the end result, many potentially violent mentally ill people go untreated and remain a threat to pur communities
